Detection informs pest treatment; disinfection must not be presented as a guarantee that bed bugs will not return. In the French pest-control sector, “3D” stands for disinfection, insect control and rodent control. It does not describe three mandatory stages of bed bug treatment.
For a property with suspected bed bugs, distinguish the inspection, the treatment targeting insects, and any separately justified cleaning or disinfection. Each service should have a clear objective and scope.
Step 1: establish what has been found
Prepare useful observations
List the rooms concerned, when signs appeared and what has already been attempted. Keep clear photographs of insects or traces if available. Ask what evidence supports the diagnosis rather than relying on a single sign.
Ask about the inspection method
The French consumer authority DGCCRF recommends an assessment on site rather than a diagnosis made only remotely. If a detection dog or a device is proposed, ask about its role, its limits and the report you will receive. Do not assume that a particular technique is included or that it guarantees exhaustive detection.
Step 2: clarify the insect-control treatment
Treatment targets the insects and should reflect the findings and the constraints of the property. DGCCRF gives priority to mechanical and thermal approaches. If insecticides are proposed, ask for the protocol and the instructions that apply to the actual treatment. Professional intervention does not imply zero risk or a guaranteed outcome.

Cleaning and disinfection: specify the purpose
If cleaning or disinfection is proposed, ask why it is needed, which surfaces it concerns and which product or process will be used. It must not be sold as protection against all future infestations.
Request instructions on what to clean, what to leave untouched temporarily and why, according to the treatment used. Cleaning is not a substitute for follow-up. Before moving belongings or adding another product, check with the professional responsible for the treatment.
Prepare a practical discussion
Describe the rooms and beds, access difficulties, products already used, and the presence of children or pets. Keep the quotation and written instructions available to everyone occupying the property. Do not infer a universal re-entry time from a general guide.

How long does bed bug treatment take?
The timetable depends on the situation, the method and the planned follow-up. Ask for the proposed schedule and the conditions for further visits; there is no universal elimination deadline.
Are pesticide treatments safe for people and animals?
Professional application does not mean an absence of risk. Request written instructions for staying away, returning, ventilation and cleaning, adapted to the actual treatment, together with precautions for occupants and pets. A generic instruction to leave for a few hours is not sufficient.
How should follow-up be organised?
Keep the inspection report and dated observations for each room. Agree on whom to contact, how to report further signs, which visits are included and when a new quotation would be required.
